Paul Rice, Memorial University of Newfoundland

PAUL F. RICE is an Associate Professor of Musicology in the School of Music, Memorial University of Newfoundland. After completing his doctoral studies at the University of Victoria in 1983, he worked for the Shakespeare Music Catalogue Project, and subsequently taught at McMaster University and the University of Alberta before moving to Newfoundland. His research interests include eighteenth-century French and English music, and all aspects of opera. In addition to being a frequent broadcaster over the CBC, he is the author of the monograph, The Performing Arts at Fontainebleau from Louis XIV to Louis XVI. More recently, he completed a study of five unpublished operas by Rameau which is currently under review for future publication. Dr. Rice continues to edit scores by well-known and lesser-known eighteenth-century composers. These scores have been used for commercial recordings (Rameau: Orchestral Suites, Vol. 1 & 2 on Naxos) as well as in public performances and publications. He is currently engaged in a three-year study of the English secular contata, which is supported by a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
