Author Biography
Harold Wiens, University of Alberta
HAROLD WIENS was born and received his early education in Leaminton, Ontario. Upon graduating from Wilfrid Laurier University, he spent five years studying and performing in Germany, and graduated from the Nordwestdeutsche Musik-Akademie with honours. Studies were in part made possible by a German Academic Exchange Fellowship which he won for three consecutive years. Presently, he is a Professor in the Department of Music at the University of Alberta, a position he has held since 1975.
Harold has appeared as recitalist and as soloist with orchestras and choral societies in a number of countries throughout Europe. Also, he has performed across Canada and the U.S.A. Radio and television recordings include appearances on the national CBC networks. He has contributed to a disc recording released by Radio Canada International. During the last few years, Harold has premiered many new compositions. Violet Archer, Alfred Fisher and Gerhard Krapf have composed works for him. In August 1992, he released a recording, funded by the Alberta Foundation of the Performing Arts, which included a number of these compositions.
Harold is in demand as a singer, adjudicator, and workshop clinician. In recent years, he has adjudicated the provincial music festival finals in British Columbia and Manitoba, and senior voice at the Kiwanis Music Festival of Greater Toronto. In March 2001, he conducted masterclasses and performed in Paraguay, South America.
