Philip Silvey, University of Illinois
PHILIP SILVEY earned a bachelor’s degree in music education and composition at Houghton College and a master's degree in music composition at The Pennsylvania State University. He is currently completing a doctorate of education in choral music at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. For seven years, Philip was the director of choral music at Allegan High School in Michigan where his choirs performed at the Midwestern Conference on School Music and at the Michigan Youth Arts Festival. He has also held teaching positions at Hope College, Seminar 99 at Western Michigan University, Oakland Hills Summer Music Camp, and the Illinois Summer School for the Arts.
Philip has been a panelist for the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) central division conference, guest conductor for the Michigan School Vocal Music Association (MSVMA) district choral clinic and the Illinois Macon County Regional High School Choral Festival. He has also served as an adjudicator for MSVMA district and state choral festivals. He is currently a member of Choragos, an early music vocal ensemble that has performed at Toronto 2000 Musical Intersections and at the 2001 ACDA national convention. Philip’s research interests lie in the perspectives of voluntary lifelong music learners and the choral singer's learning experience in relationship to musical works.
