Author Biography

Brenda Ravenscroft, Queen’s University

BRENDA RAVENSCROFT is an Associate Professor of Music Theory at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. She holds degrees from Cape Town, King’s College (London), and the University of British Columbia. Her teaching at Queen’s University includes theory courses ranging from Modal Counterpoint to Schenkerian analysis to seminars in the analysis of 20th-century music. Her research interests lie in the field of 20th-century American music, particularly in the relationship between words and music in vocal compositions, and in the rhythmic organization of contemporary music. Brenda has published articles on Elliott Carter’s vocal music, and has an article on Lou Harrison’s “Fugue for Percussion” forthcoming in Perspectives of New Music. Her presentations include papers on the music of Carter and Harrison, as well as John Cage and Henry Cowell. She lives in a house in a forest with her husband and two young children.
