Carol Beynon, University of Western Ontario
CAROL BEYNON is an associate professor in choral music pedagogy at the University of Western Ontario, Faculty of Education. Carol holds a doctorate in Theory and Policy Studies from the University of Toronto and a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from the University of Western Ontario. She has been a choral director of many award-winning choirs at the high school level as well as a string teacher in both elementary and secondary schools. Carol is co-conductor of the Amabile Boys Choirs which include a treble choir and tenor/bass ensemble. Both choirs have gained widespread recognition for their performances and recordings in Canada and abroad. Five-time nationalist finalists in the CBC competition, the choirs’ performances have been featured on CBC, BBC and Bravo TV.
Carol has been a guest conductor, adjudicator and clinician for local, provincial, and national conferences and festivals. Her research work focuses on teacher development at both the national and international level. She was a visiting lecturer in vocal music education at the University of the West Indies as well as the external consultant responsible for setting up the Bermuda Teacher Induction Program for the Department of Education in Bermuda. Her research interests focus on teacher development, the male singing voice, feminist studies, and musical literacy development in young children. She has published articles in such journals as the Canadian Music Educators Journal, the Alberta Journal of Educational Research, Education Canada, and The Asia-Pacific Journal of Teacher Education. In 2001, Prentice Hall will release her first book, co-authored with A. Geddis and B. Onslow, entitled Learning-to-Teach: Concepts and Cases for Novice Teachers and Teacher Educators.
