Ancient Echoes: Stylistic Influences in Healey Willan's Liturgical Music

STEPHANIE MARTIN is Assistant Professor at York University in Toronto where she teaches musicianship and conducting, leads the Early Music Ensembles as well as the Women’s Chorus. With Pax Christi Chorale, an 80 voice oratorio choir she has conducted major works with orchestra, including Brahms German Requiem, Elgar's Dream of Gerontius and Bach's St. John Passion. For 11 years she was Organist and Director of Music at Calvin Presbyterian Church in Toronto. As a performer on harpsichord and baroque chamber organ, she can be heard on several recordings on the Naxos and Marquis labels, as well as 5 self-produced CD recordings of choral and chamber music.

BRIAN E. POWER received his Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Toronto in 1999. He is currently Associate Professor of Music at Brock University, where he teaches Medieval, Renaissance and Canadian music history, as well as music computer applications. His research involves music for the Proper of the Mass in fifteenth-century sources, and the transmission of music manuscripts in late Medieval Europe. His recent publications include a chapter in the book Music and Medieval Manuscripts: Paleography and Performance (Ashgate Press, 2004), and a forthcoming article in the Italian early-music journal Recercare: Rivista per lo studio e la pratica della musica antica. He is presently preparing a critical edition of the polyphonic introits of Trent Codex 93, a manuscript dating from the 1450s, for the series Recent Researches in the Music of the Middle Ages and Early Renaissance (A-R Editions), and is co-editing a volume of essays entitled The Sounds and Sights of Performance in Medieval and Renaissance Music (Ashgate Press). Dr. Power is also a choral tenor, a violinist, and a player of historical stringed instruments. He is a former member of the award-winning Calvin Presbyterian Church Choir (Toronto), the University of Toronto Historical Performance Ensembles, the U. of T. Symphony Orchestra, and the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, and was a founding member of the Newfoundland Symphony Youth Orchestra.
