Patricia Shehan Campbell, University of Washington, Seattle WA
PATRICIA SHEHAN CAMPBELL teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education, including music for children, sociology of music, and research methods at The University of Washington School of Music. Since 1999, she has coordinated the American Music Studies program events at UW.
Patricia’s interests include music in early and middle childhood, world musics in education, and the use of movement as a pedagogical tool. She has delivered lectures and conducted clinics at conferences across the U.S. and in Europe, Asia, Latin America, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Campbell is published widely on issues of cross-cultural music learning, music preference, children’s musical development, and music methods for children. She is external examiner for numerous undergraduate and graduate programs in music, including those at The University of Limerick, The University of Sydney, The University of Natal (South Africa), and Nanyang University (Singapore).
Patricia is the author of Songs in their Heads, Music in cultural context, and Lessons from the world, and co-author of Roots and branches, Multicultural perspectives in music education, Music in childhood, The lion’s roar: Chinese luogu percussion ensembles, From rice paddies and temple yards: Traditional music of Viet Nam, and Silent temples, songful hearts: Traditional music of Cambodia. She has served on the editorial boards of the Music Educators Journal (1986-90) and the Journal of Research in Music Education (1990-96), and is currently a member of the editorial committees for Psychology of Music (UK) and Research Studies in Music Education (Australia). Campbell is editor of the College Music Symposium and was named a Senior Research Scholar by the Music Educators National Conference in 2002. She holds a Ph.D. from Kent State University and a B.F.A. from Ohio University.
