Adam Adler, University of Toronto
ADAM ALDER, a specialist in choral music education, holds degrees in music education from the Universities of Western Ontario, New Brunswick, and Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In June, 2002, Adam became the first person to receive the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music Education from The University of Toronto. Adam’s area of research interest is in male gender issues in music education; he is presently co-authoring a chapter on that topic with Australian researcher Scott Harrison, to be published in 2004 in Volume 2 of the Canadian music educator’s association research to practice series: Questioning the music education paradigm. Adam has taught music in schools across southern Ontario, and has focused his most recent work on the exciting and turbulent middle years. He recently completed a successful season as conductor of the Hart House Singers at The University of Toronto, and is the founding conductor of the community choir Just Singers. He is active as a consultant and clinician, and his compositions and arrangements have been performed by choirs across Canada and abroad. In 1998, Adam initiated The Margarita Project which aims to introduce choirs to previously unperformed songs by contemporary artists and groups. Adam also performs as a soloist and professional chorister and is one of the founding members of the folk group Whaler's Fate.
