Abstract

From her unique position as the executive director of a national choral organization and active participant in a number of international events and meetings, Abbott reports on the current trends and issues in the field of choral music around the world. From the current trends in programming and stage presentations to the concerns about training and working conditions for conductors, Abbott will share the information and insight she has gained in recent years. This presentation will also include a look at the 2006 World Assembly of Associations of Choral Conductors held in Argentina, the upcoming World Symposium to be held in Copenhagen (July 2008), and current International Federation for Choral Music (IFCM) projects.

Patricia Abbott, McGill University

PATRICIA ABBOTT has been Executive Director of the Association of Canadian Choral Conductors since 1993, and has been actively working in the field of choral music as a conductor, singer, teacher and arts administrator for 25 years. A graduate of McGill University, where she obtained a master’s degree in vocal performance and pedagogy, Ms. Abbott conducts the Chorale du Gesù women’s choir, the English Montreal School Board Chorale and the FACE Young Singers, based at FACE School (Fine Arts Core Education) where she teaches as an artist-in-residence. Pat also teaches choral conducting at McGill University as a guest instructor. She has shared her passion and knowledge of Canadian choral music in workshops, conferences and festivals across Canada, in the United States, in Belgium, France and most recently in Argentina. A judge for the Juno Awards six times, she sat on the national jury of the 2006 CBC Competition for Amateur Choirs and the 2006 National Music Festival. Pat is a member of the artistic committee for the Polyfollia International Festival in France and a member of the editorial board for the prestigious Choral Journal published by the American Choral Directors Association. Her work in the choral field has been recognized with a National Choral Award, presented in 2002 by ACCC and by the Quebec Choral Order of Merit in 2002.
