In Flanders Fields: Music of Remembrance in the Songs of Frederick R. Emerson

GLENN COLTON, pianist and musicologist, is Associate Professor of Music at Lakehead University, where he teaches courses in music history, Canadian music, form and analysis, and music criticism. From 2001 to 2004 he served as Chair of the Department of Music at Lakehead, during which time a new concurrent degree program in music and education was established. He has received multiple awards for excellence in university teaching, research, and administration from that institution. Glenn’s research has focused on aspects of music in Canada, and his work on the piano music of Canadian composer Jean Coulthard is considered the definitive source on the subject. He is a contributor of articles to the Canadian University Music Review, the International Alliance for Women in Music Journal, the University of Toronto Quarterly, the Newfoundland Quarterly, Fermata, the Phenomenon of Singing, and the Encyclopedia of Music in Canada, among other publications. Current projects include a comprehensive history of music in Newfoundland and Labrador and a biographical study of Dr. Frederick R. Emerson. Research toward his forthcoming books on these subjects has been supported by a SSHRC research development grant from Lakehead University and a research grant from the J.R. Smallwood Foundation for Newfoundland and Labrador Studies. He is co-editor, with Dr. Beverley Diamond of Memorial University, of a special forthcoming issue of the journal Newfoundland Studies devoted to music in Newfoundland and Labrador.
