About the Journal

Focus and Scope

PROTO - from ancient greek proto - or protos - meaning "first", superlative of pro - meaning "before".

Proto-type is an online journal of undergraduate research and scholarship for the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland. It is the goal of Proto-type to provide a venue for senior engineering undergraduate students to make lasting contributions to the public literature, for many, the first formative opportunity to do so. The benefits of Proto-type include the convenience of a formal writing venue without the cost and schedule constraints of traditional conference proceedings and journals, the indefinite archiving and thus lasting reference that builds a publication record for the student, and the opportunity to involve peer-review and formal academic mentoring from professors that may use the experience to recruit graduate students and build upon their own research interests. In the first instance it is anticipated that Proto-type be used for formal submissions of research papers assigned through final-year engineering courses. It is proposed that the venue later develop into a forum for work-term related research papers that, through coordination with the department of cooperative education may be an optional substitute for more traditional work term reports.

Within Proto-type it is proposed that categories of research be established in accordance with the participating instructors, courses and disciplines. The inaugural edition of Proto-type is limited to one category; that of Coastal and Ocean Engineering in which participating students will submit a well-researched, critically-reviewed case study in the subject of coastal and ocean engineering technology - utilizing typical IEEE conference paper formatting for the submission. The journal in this category will, thus, be annually published in accordance with the related course offering (ENGI.8751). An award for the paper that is deemed to be of the highest quality, relevence and impact is given to the student in the form of recognition on an engraved trophy housed in the Civil Engineering classroom EN2050 at Memorial.

Peer Review Process

Peer-review protocols vary in accordance with instructor requirements for each section.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
