Abstract

Liberal theory in international relations predicts that states who are linked by trade, membership in international organizations, and shared democratic government will tend to
become increasingly peaceful and cooperative. In this paper, I will examine the validity of this prediction in relation to the European Union.

Callum Petrie Carmichael, Memorial University of Newfoundland

Callum Carmichael is a Memorial University graduate, having received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Russian language and literature, minoring in Political Science, as part of a Canadian Armed Forces officer training plan. His limited experience with the military, in combination with his academic work, have instilled in him a keen interest in international affairs in many areas of the world, but most specifically those concerning Eastern Europe and Russia.
