Subject-Object Asymmetries and Verb Classes

In this paper the division between patterns of data with unaccusative and unergative verb classes is examined. It is shown that in Catalan patterns of data often assumed to belong to the Romance unaccusative side of the division, such as cliticization of NE and postverbal bare plurals, may also fall under the unergative side of the division. Although the main goal of the paper is descriptive, some possible solutions for
the apparent paradox are proposed.
